Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

PMDD is a very severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) which causes emotional and physical symptoms every month during the week or two before your period starts. It is common for women to have mild PMS symptoms before their period but PMDD symptoms are much worse and can seriously impact your life.

Common PMDD Symptoms

Emotional Symptoms:

  • Mood swings
  • feeling upset or tearful
  • feeling angry or irritable
  • feelings of anxiety
  • feeling hopeless
  • feelings of tension or being on edge
  • difficulty concentrating
  • feeling overwhelmed
  • lack of energy
  • less interest in activities you normally enjoy
  • suicidal feelings

Physical and behavioural symptoms:

  • breast tenderness or swelling
  • pain in muscles or joints
  • headaches
  • feeling bloated
  • changes in appetite such as overeating or cravings
  • sleep problems
  • finding it hard to avoid or resolve conflicts with people around you
  • becoming very upset if you feel that others are rejecting you

It is not fully known or understand what causes PMDD but there are some possible factors which may increase the chances of suffering from PMDD such as:

  • being very sensitive to changes in hormone levels. It is normal for our hormone levels to change during our period but some people may be extra sensitive to this.
  • Genetic variations may also input to increased sensitivity to the hormone levels.
