LGBTQIA+ stands for lesbian, gay, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual plus. Despite the world becoming more accepting and tolerant, LBGTQIA+ members are at a higher risk of suffering from mental health problems. Discrimination, rejection and a lack of education can cause severe affects on self esteem and can cause people to hide their true identity. LBGTQIA+ members from minority backgrounds are again at a higher risk of mental health problems as they face even higher levels of discrimination in the form of racism, sexism or sectarianism.
Isolation is very common among those who suffer from mental illness and for those who have faced homophobia or transphobia it can be even more isolating. Facing these issues alone is incredibly hard and it can be easy to forget that there is a lot of support out there for LGBTQ+ members!
