Let It Out LBGTQ+

LGBTQ+ stands for lesbian, gay, transgender, queer and intersex. Despite the world becoming more accepting and tolerant, LBGTQ+ members are at a higher risk of suffering from mental health problems. Discrimination, rejection and a lack of education can cause severe affects on self esteem and can cause people to hide their true identity. LBGTQ+ members from minority backgrounds are again at a higher risk of mental health problems as they face even higher levels of discrimination in the form of racism, sexism or sectarianism.

Are you struggling? Get help!

Isolation is very common among those who suffer from mental illness and for those who have faced homophobia or transphobia it can be even more isolating. Facing these issues alone is incredibly hard and it can be easy to forget that there is a lot of support out there for LGBTQ+ members! If you want help then go to your doctor who can tell you what options are available for you or call a helpline such as Lifeline.

You do not need to be alone and there are lots of people who would be happy to help you! If you are suffering from these symptoms then it may be time to seek help:

  • Feeling tired and having little energy
  • Feeling tearful often
  • Shutting yourself away from everyone
  • No longer enjoy the things you used to
  • Using alcohol or drugs to cope
  • Harming yourself or thinking about it
  • Having thoughts about ending your life

If you are struggling with anyone of the following problems then you should consider seeking some help so you can cope better with:

  • Difficulty accepting your sexual orientation
  • Difficulties coping with other's reactions
  • Feelings that your body does not match your true gender
  • If you are transitioning (from male to female/female to male)
  • Low self esteem
  • Self harm and/or suicidal thoughts
  • Depression from bullying or discrimination
  • Rejection from your family or community
  • Fear of violence in public situations
