Anxiety & Panic Disorders

Anxiety or fear are emotions which are meant to keep us safe. It triggers our fight, flight or freeze response which is our biological reaction to dangerous situations. Take a look at the video further down the page to learn more about this.

We will be taking a look at anxiety as a mental illness and how it affects those who suffer from it on this page.

Symptoms

Physical Symptoms

  • Nausea
  • Tensed muscles and headaches
  • Pins and needles
  • Dizziness or light headed
  • Fast breathing
  • Sweating and hot flushes
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Sleeping problems
  • Needing the toilet more or less
  • A churning feeling in the stomach
  • Panic attacks (we will take a look at these further down)


Psychological Symptoms

  • Feeling tense and nervous
  • Having a sense of dread or that the worst is going to happen
  • Feeling as if the world is speeding up or slowing down
  • Feeling that others can see your anxiety and are looking at you
  • Mind racing with thoughts
  • Focusing on negative experiences and thinking about it over again
  • Feeling restless and a lack of concentration
  • Feeling numb

What is a panic attack?

A panic attack is an exaggeration of the normal reaction to fear, stress or excitement. It is an overwhelming build-up of physical sensations such as:

  • Pounding heartbeat
  • Feeling faint 
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Chest pains
  • Breathing problems
  • Feeling shaky
  • Feel disconnected from your body (disassociation)

During a panic attack you may feel like:

  • You are losing control
  • You are going to faint
  • You are having a heart attack
  • You are going to die

What can I do?

The more you know about your mental health the easier it is to find methods to help you to ride out a panic attack. 

Breathing exercises can help you to reduce symptoms and distraction techniques can be useful.

A common anxiety disorder whose main symptom is over worrying about events and activities. This can make you feel out of control and anxious almost all of the time.

This disorder causes you to have regular panic attacks with no real trigger. These panic attacks can be intense, sudden and very frightening. It can also cause you to worry about having another panic attack

This is an intense fear or dread of social situations. It can happen before, during or after the event and commonly occurs situations such as public speaking, meeting new people, dating or going out in public. You may avoid certain situations as you find it hard to control your anxieties.

Phobias

Social Anxiety Disorder

This is the overwhelming fear of an object, place, situation, feeling or animal. A phobia is stronger than a fear and and develop when a person has increased feelings of danger about an object. If you have a phobia it may cause you to plan your whole routine around avoiding the object.

Diagnosis & Treatment

To receive an anxiety diagnosis you have to go to your GP or mental health professional. They will carry out a number of tests such as:

  • Complete a physical exam to see if your anxiety could be linked to another medical condition
  • Order blood or urine tests if it might be linked to another medical condition
  • Ask detailed questions about your symptoms and history
  • Use psychological questionnaires

You may also be advised to contact your GP or mental health professional by a counsellor, an external charity or your school.
