Mindfulness is a skill which teaches us to live our lives in the moment. We spend most of our time in our heads, focusing on the past or future and worrying about things that are out of our control. It is very easy to get swept up in our thoughts and if you have a mental illness it can cause severe emotional distress. Here are some easy mindfulness exercises you can try!
The body scan is a great introduction to mindfulness. Our emotions have physical side effects and this exercise allows us to notice how we physically feel i.e. tense shoulders.
This is a visualisation exercise which means that it uses your imagination. Imagining your thoughts as objects which can drift away teaches us the skills to cope when our thoughts are causing us distress.
Practising mindfulness in your daily life is very important. Mindfulness is a skill and takes practise. The more we practise the easier it will be to use mindfulness when we are struggling with our thoughts.
