Borderline Personality Disorder

BPD is also known as Emotional Sensitivity Disorder or Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder. You may be diagnosed with a personality disorder if you have difficulties with the way that you think or feel about yourself and other people.

Researchers think BPD is caused by your genetics and/or stressful and traumatic events experience throughout your life.

Diagnosis

If you experience at least 5 out of these 9 symtpoms on a daily basis then  you may be diagnosed with BPD:

  • You worry that people with abandon you and will do anything to stop it.
  • You have intense emotions which can last from a few hours to a few days. Your emotions can also change very quickly.
  • You do not have a sense of who you are and it can change depending on who you are with.
  • You struggle to make and keep stable relationships.
  • You feel empty or numb a lot of the time.
  • You act impulsively and do things that may harm you (drugs, alcohol, dangerous driving).
  • You self-harm and have suicidal feelings.
  • You have intense feelings of anger that can be difficult to control.
  • When very stressed you may have paranoia and delusions.

BPD can be a controversial diagnosis as it can come from a range of symptoms. This means that people with BPD will have very different experiences to others with BPD. 

It is common to experience others mental health problems along with BPD such as:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • eating problems
  • dissociation
  • psychosis
  • PTSD

BPD affects how we feel about ourselves and others around us. Each experience of BPD is unique but below are some common experiences othat people with  BPD will have.

  • lonely
  • overwhelmed by your emotions and how often they change
  • like something is wrong with you and that you deserve bad things to happen
  • that you don't know what you want from life or what your like/dislike 
  • that you are bad person or not a real person
  • like you are a child in an adult world

  • self-harming or attempting suicide
  • overspending or binge eating
  • using drugs, alcohol or smoking to try and cope
  • quitting before achieving something or avoiding activities that you may fail at
  • changing jobs, hobbies or plans regularly 
  • keeping yourself busy so you are not alone

  • that friends or partners will leave you forever if they are angry or upset
  • that no one understands you or that you do not understand others
  • that people are either lovely and kind or nasty and hurtful with no middle ground
  • that the world is dangerous and scary and you should run away and hide

  • getting angry and frustated with others
  • struggling to trust people
  • wanting to be close to people but worrying they will leave and reject you so you avoid them
  • having unrealistic expectations of people and contacting them very frequently
  • ending relationships with people you think might leave you
  • anxiously looking out for signs that you will be rejected
